Canon EOS R7

Canon launched the EOS R7 in 2022 as a mirrorless camera built around an APS-C sensor and the RF mount. It combines resolution, speed and video capability in one body.

With a high-resolution sensor, a 15fps maximum burst and in-body stabilisation, it suits photographers who want detail for prints, speed for action and freedom to shoot handheld. Recording reaches 4K, so stills shooters can dabble in video without carrying a second device.

The body measures 132 x 90 x 92mm and weighs 612g, and weather sealing adds confidence in dusty or damp conditions. Two SD card slots and USB charging round out a practical ownership package.

The APS-C CMOS sensor, paired with the Digic X processor, produces files with plenty of resolution for large prints and generous cropping. That cropping headroom is especially useful for distant wildlife or sports subjects, where the best composition often appears after the frame is captured.

Autofocus offers 651 points for placing focus around a composition. The 15fps maximum burst rate suits action work, though treat it as a peak figure rather than a sustained speed.

In-body stabilisation counters camera shake, supporting sharper handheld frames at slower shutter speeds and in dim light. It corrects your own movement rather than the subject's, so a moving dancer or dog still needs a fast shutter.

Sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 32000, giving room to work indoors or at dusk. A 1/8000s top shutter speed helps when you want wide apertures in bright light, and the 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder provides a detailed live preview.

The R7 records up to 4K, giving resolution for online delivery and client work, with headroom to crop or reframe a shot in editing. Clips at that level suit projects from talking-head pieces to travel footage.

Frame rates reach 120fps as a separate capability, supporting slow-motion playback. That opens up action, sport and detail shots, while high-rate recording makes card capacity worth planning for a longer session. Use it when stretched timing helps reveal quick movement clearly.

A timelapse mode is built in, so clouds, traffic or construction sequences need no external intervalometer. Files record in MOV or MPEG-4, giving two format options for the editing workflow after the shoot.

The 3-inch TFT screen carries 1.62 million dots and responds to touch, giving another way to operate the camera. The screen also flips, supporting composition from varied angles rather than a fixed rear position.

The body is weather sealed, so dust and light moisture are less of a worry on trails and in drizzle. Sealing is not waterproofing, and heavy rain still calls for a cover.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in for connecting the camera to other devices. There is no GPS, so the camera does not record location data on its own.

There is no built-in flash, but an external flash is supported, so you can add light when a scene demands it. Live view rounds out the shooting options for tripod work and video.

The R7 takes SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, including UHS-II compatible media, and offers two card slots. That extra capacity means fewer card changes during long events, where swapping a card can cost you frames.

The LP-E6NH battery is rated at 660 shots. Actual endurance varies with how much you lean on the screen, viewfinder and wireless features, so a spare battery is a sensible addition for long sessions.

USB charging lets you top the battery up between sessions, which is useful during travel days or long events. Carry a charged spare when the schedule leaves little time for topping up.
