What We Like
+Exceptional 8x zoom range (50-400mm) provides versatile one-lens solution for landscapes, wildlife, and sports
+Compact and lightweight design at 7.2 inches and 1.18kg, smaller and lighter than traditional 100-400mm lenses
+Advanced VXD autofocus delivers fast, quiet, and precise focusing with excellent tracking for moving subjects
+Half-macro capability with 1:2 magnification at 50mm end for close-up shooting versatility
+Robust weather sealing and fluorine front coating protect against dust, moisture, and smudges in outdoor conditions
+Effective VC optical image stabilization enables handheld shooting at telephoto lengths and slower shutter speeds
Worth Knowing
Variable aperture (f/4.5-6.3) becomes slower at telephoto end, limiting low-light performance compared to faster lenses
Image stabilization (VC) not as effective as Nikon's VR system and lacks CIPA specification
Tripod mount is sold separately as optional accessory, not included with lens
Occasional autofocus hunting reported at 400mm, especially with fast-moving subjects approaching the lens
