What We Like
+Extremely compact and lightweight at 440g with f/2.8 constant aperture
+Excellent sharpness throughout zoom range, nearly matching premium 24-70mm GM II
+Smooth, creamy bokeh from 11-blade circular aperture
+Superb close-focus performance with 19cm minimum focus distance
+Versatile focal range ideal for travel, street photography, and video work
Worth Knowing
Significant barrel distortion at wide end requires in-camera correction (non-disableable in RAW)
Pronounced lens breathing during focus pulls, limiting video flexibility without breathing compensation
Narrow zoom range (24-50mm) sacrifices 70mm coverage compared to standard 24-70mm lenses
No optical image stabilization, relying solely on in-body stabilization

Read our notes on general
The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is a compact, lightweight and fast standard zoom lens for Sony Alpha full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups with an 11-blade circular aperture, it weighs just 440g and measures 74.8 x 92.3mm. The lens delivers impressive sharpness throughout its entire zoom range at f/2.8, with lab-test results revealing very similar levels to the much pricier Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens. However, it produces significant barrel distortion in the 24-35mm range that requires always-on automatic correction which cannot be switched off in-camera or when editing RAW files.
