What We Like
+Single-sensor dual fisheye design eliminates multi-camera syncing and stitching complexity
+Sharp across entire image circle at f/3.5 with Air Sphere Coating reducing flare and ghosting
+Compact folded optical design at just 290g makes it extremely portable for travel
+144° wide field of view with 60mm interpupillary distance matches human vision for immersive 3D VR
+STM autofocus operates like standard RF lens for intuitive still shooting and pre-focus before video
+Affordable APS-C VR solution at $1,099-$1,299 vs $2,000+ for full-frame RF 5.2mm alternative
Worth Knowing
Requires Canon EOS R7 firmware 1.5.0+ or R50 V for full VR functionality; limited camera compatibility
No servo autofocus during video recording; manual focus or One-Shot AF required before filming
144° field of view is narrower than full-frame RF 5.2mm (190°), resulting in less immersive VR experience
Relies on Canon's subscription-based software (EOS VR Utility/Adobe Premiere Pro plugin) for VR file conversion and processing

Read our notes on general
The Canon RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye features a folded optical design with separate left and right optical systems to capture stereoscopic 3D imagery with a 144° field of view to a single APS-C image sensor. The lens is sharp throughout the entire image circle at f/3.5 with little improvement through f/5.6. It is the first non-L series lens to feature Canon's Air Sphere Coating. Compared to the full-frame RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye, the APS-C RF-S 3.9 is more affordable and designed for accessible VR content creation.
