Canon EOS M200

The Canon EOS M200 is a compact mirrorless camera released in 2019. It measures 108 x 67 x 35 mm, so it slips easily into a small bag. That makes it an easy camera to have with you every day.

Its combination of a 24MP APS-C sensor, 4K video and a flip-out touchscreen suits travellers, family photographers and anyone stepping up from a phone who wants more control over their pictures.

Owning it involves composing on the rear screen, since there is no viewfinder, and packing a spare battery for longer days out.

The 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor works alongside the Digic 8 processor, and the resolution still leaves room to crop images while keeping plenty of pixels for sizeable prints.

Sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 25600, covering bright outdoor light through dim interiors. The shutter tops out at 1/4000 second, which covers typical daylight work but can limit wide apertures in strong sun.

Burst shooting reaches a maximum of 6.1 fps, enough for candid moments and slower subjects, though extended action sequences will test that rate. Autofocus offers 143 points, giving you many positions to place over your subject.

There is no in-body stabilisation, so reducing camera shake at slower shutter speeds depends on the lens, your holding technique or a firm support. The EF-M mount defines which lenses you can fit.

The camera records video at up to 4K resolution, which leaves room to crop or reframe a shot during editing. Frame rates reach up to 60 fps, useful for smoother motion or a gentle slow-motion effect. These are separate maximums, so the highest resolution and the highest frame rate may not be available in one combined recording mode.

A built-in timelapse mode turns slow scenes, such as drifting clouds or a setting sun, into short clips without extra gear or manual assembly in software.

The flip-out touchscreen makes solo filming practical. Tilt the screen toward you to check your framing, and tap through settings between takes.

Clips record as MPEG-4 files.

Framing and adjustment happen on the 3-inch TFT touchscreen. Its 1,040,000-dot panel is sharp enough to confirm focus before you shoot, and the flip-out design tilts for waist-level, overhead and self-framed shots.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in, so the camera has two wireless connection options for linking to other devices.

A built-in flash gives a little fill light indoors or against backlit subjects. There is no support for an external flash and no GPS to tag locations, so plan around both.

The body has no weather sealing, so keep it sheltered from rain, dust and spray when you are out shooting.

Images and video go onto a single SD, SDHC or SDXC card, and the slot supports UHS-I speeds. With only one slot there is no in-camera copy of a shoot, so a dependable card matters all the more.

The LP-E12 battery is listed at 315 shots per charge. That figure is not a promise of real-world endurance, since conditions vary, so a second battery is a sensible buy for full days out.

The camera does not charge over USB, so you cannot top the battery up from a power bank or computer while out. Charge your spares the night before a shoot.
